Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

Jerry Seinfeld has always been one to take a genre or format that people already know and bend it to his very charming will. This was done with sitcoms when his timeless tv show Seinfeld took over the world and made way for a whole new era of sitcoms like Friends and How I Met Your Mother. After Seinfeld ended Jerry maintained his career in stand-up comedy pursuing it like an art form that can never be perfected, but not doing much else (There was the Bee Movie, but at this point that movie is just one giant meme). Then finally in 2012 a new show from the genius of Jerry Seinfeld emerged that would reshape a known television format, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee would change the format of late night talk shows.

There is something that is so enjoyable about a great interview, they can be entertaining, educational, revealing, and heart-warming. Interviews provide a chance to be a fly on a wall for a conversation one would normally not be able to be apart of, but it does take a the right circumstances or elements for an interview to be those things. It requires that there’s a good interviewer (someone who listens well and asks good conversational questions), an interesting subject/interviewee, and some shared knowledge, at least enough shared knowledge for the interviewer to ask thoughtful questions.

Seinfeld managed to mix all of those elements together beautifully for the 2012 released Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee. As the name suggests the show is Jerry and some other comedian getting in a car, handpicked by Jerry who is also a car lover, and going to get coffee. This formula is broken a few times in the show as not all of his guests are comedians and there is the one time he gets in a boat with Jimmy Fallon.

Acting as the interviewer/host of the show, Jerry uses his illustrious career in comedy and his guests shared love and passion for comedy as the driving force for conversation. His style is laid back keeping things light and fun, but allowing the tone to be serious when necessary. This helps the pace of the show to be engaging keeping viewers fixed on the screen. What is presented is a tight 20 minutes of hilariously fun conversations with some of today's greatest comedic minds. The show originally aired as a web series on Crackle.com and is still produced by the site. In early January 2018 Netflix picked up all seasons of the show and it has been a delight to watch through.

The best episode I’ve seen so far and possibly the happiest thing you can watch in TV history is season 2’s (the season is called Light & Sweet) episode with special guest Julia Louis-Dreyfus! The episode is joyous reunion between two old friends. Julia and Jerry go down memory lane sharing some of their favorite times shooting Seinfeld together years ago. They speak to each like cherished life long friends sharing tips on marriage and family with one another all the while they joke around simply enjoying the time they share. These are types of interviews that I always wish we could see more of from the entertainment world. Just two friends and colleagues sharing their passion for their work with one another allowing the world to listen in for a moment.

So, if you are looking for something to make you watch the episode above and if you enjoy it watch some more of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. It’s always a good time when you go for a ride with Jerry Seinfeld and one of his hilarious comedian friends!
